2010 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL TO OPEN WITH WORLD PREMIERE OF DREAMWORKS ANIMATION’S “SHREK FOREVER AFTER

shrekforever.png

New York, NY – March 1, 2010 – The Tribeca Film Festival and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (Nasdaq: DWA) today announced that “Shrek Forever After” will open the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by American Express. “Shrek Forever After” is the final chapter in the adventures of the beloved ogre, Shrek, and the first of the series to be presented in 3D. It is directed by Mike Mitchell and stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas. The premiere will take place on Wednesday, April 21 and the Festival will run through May 2.

“We have always sought to open our Festival with films that are captivating and strike an emotional chord with movie-goers. ‘Shrek Forever After’ combines the very best in storytelling and artistry while showcasing the wonders of innovative 3D filmmaking. It is one of the most anticipated new movies of 2010 and we are so pleased that DreamWorks Animation is bringing the final chapter of Shrek to the Tribeca Film Festival for its world premiere,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival.

“The final chapter of Shrek’s personal journey brings all of our beloved characters full circle in a way that pays creative homage to each of the previous films and the stories they told, while taking Shrek and his family and friends on a fantastic, emotion-filled journey that is funny at every turn,” said the film’s director, Mike Mitchell. “Technological innovation at DreamWorks Animation has done wonders for our storytelling capabilities and I am excited to share these with audiences when we bring Far Far Away into the third dimension for the very first time.”

In “Shrek Forever After,” Shrek, who has already successfully challenged an evil dragon, rescued a beautiful princess and saved his in-laws’ kingdom, is faced with the question: What’s an ogre to do? Well, if you’re Shrek, you suddenly wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What’s happened to this ogre’s roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre,” Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.

“DreamWorks Animation is honored to bring the world premiere of ‘Shrek Forever After’ to New York City for the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival,” added DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. “It is a great privilege and tribute to our entire cast and crew to have been chosen as this year’s opening night selection.”

The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival will announce its feature film slate on March 10 and 15, 2010.

About Tribeca Film Festival:

Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2001 following the attacks on the World Trade Center to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of the lower Manhattan district through an annual celebration of film, music and culture.

The Festival’s mission is to help filmmakers reach the broadest possible audience, enable the international film community and general public to experience the power of cinema and promote New York City as a major filmmaking center. Tribeca Film Festival is well known for being a diverse international film festival that supports emerging and established directors.

The Tribeca Festival has screened over 1100 films from over 80 countries since its first festival in 2002. Since its founding, it has attracted an international audience of more than 2.3 million attendees and has generated an estimated $600 million in economic activity for New York City

Outdoors, with the scenic snowy landscapes of Park City behind her, actress Catherine Keener took time out of her twelfth Sundance Film Festival experience to talk with MakingOf about her love for the festival, her on-set experiences acting in “Please Give,” and her choice of roles. Having previously worked with director Nicole Holofcener, Keener characterized being on the set of “Please Give” as being on a team, in an environment of collaborative camaraderie and dedication. She also explained her care in spotting and avoiding cliché female characters as she seeks out unique roles, like the part she plays in “Please Give.” Click here to learn more.

In “Please Give,” Keener plays Kate, who, along with her husband Alex and teenage daughter Abby, wants to expand her apartment by buying the unit next door. However, to expand their living space, Kate and her family have to wait for their elderly neighbor to die. While waiting, Kate, Alex, and Abby develop a complicated friendship with their neighbor and her two grown granddaughters.

In addition to “Please Give,” Keener stars in another Sundance entry, the Duplass brothers’ “Cyrus.”

‘Avatar,’ ‘Star Trek’ among WGA nominees

avatar7.png

The Writer’s Guild of America released its nominations today, announcing that James Cameron’s box office behemoth "Avatar" will compete in the original screenplay category with Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber’s "(500) Days of Summer," Jon Lucas & Scott Moore’s "The Hangover," Mark Boal’s "The Hurt Locker" and the Coen brothers’ "A Serious Man." For adapted screenplay, the Guild has selected Scott Cooper’s "Crazy Heart," Nora Ephron’s "Julie & Julia," Geoffrey Fletcher’s "Precious," Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman’s "Star Trek" and Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner’s "Up in the Air." The WGA nominees for the documentary category are "Against the Tide," "Capitalism: A Love Story," "The Cove," "Earth Days," "Good Hair" and "Soundtrack for a Revolution."

Unlike other guild awards, like the DGA awards, this year’s WGA nominations may not necessarily predict the Academy Award nods to come, since several high-profile films in consideration this awards season are ineligible for nomination by the WGA due to contract requirements.

The WGA will announce the winners at its awards ceremony, taking place on February 20, 2010.
