Interview with Teresa Palmer on “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”

MakingOf: What was your collaboration process with the director?

(Teresa Palmer): Its funny, the first experience I had with John was the audition… my very first audition for ‘Sorcerer’s.’ I was super nervous and I still really hadn’t gotten over the stage of walking into auditions and being terrified and totally nervous, and he walks right in there and gave me a huge bear-hug, which no one ever does. He was like: ‘How’s it going? Come right in, don’t be nervous, don’t be shy. Do it a couple of times, we’ll play around.’ He was just so lovely and had this incredible bubbly energy and I think I worked really well with that and we hard a great camaraderie, and that sort of flowed onto the set when we ended up shooting the film. And everyone just had such a happy energy, and I think that’s because it was led by John and he’s just always like that  and it lifted everyone’s performance.

MO: Can you tell us a little bit about your character?

(TP): Yeah sure! I play Becky Barnes. She’s an NYU student… she’s a DJ. She’s kind of cool, you know, a regular chick. She’s vulnerable but sassy and she’s smart but she’s bad at physics though. And then she meets Jay Baruchel’s character, which is Dave, and he’s a total physics-nerd, and he introduces her to physics and then eventually the world of sorcery and magic. That totally blows her mind, you know, that’s not reality to her and she’s sort of awakened to this whole new idea of the magic world… and its scary at first but she finds it exciting and she goes on this crazy journey. I feel like she ends up being in her element and she enjoys it so much, has so much fun with it, and obviously they fall in love… so yeah its great!

MO: What advise do you have for any aspiring actresses out there right now?

What have you learned along the way so far?

(TP): I have learned to not get put off by rejection, because its gong to happen all the time. You’re going to audition to audition and you’re not going to be right and you have to realize that sometimes, well for the most part, that its not about a performance per say but whether you fit into the idea of the story… your look, or your age, or your accent even, if that all fits. And sometimes that doesn’t fit and you’re not the right person for the role. I don’t think you can get that upset about that, I definitely in the first few years would just cry ‘oh I got rejected,’ but now I just take it with a grain of salt.
