Interview with Christopher Egan on “Letters to Juliet”
MakingOf: How did you get involved with ‘Letters to Juliet’
Christopher Egan: Instantly I fell in love with Charlie. I don’t know why… there was just so much about his character that I knew I could have so much fun with, and I did. Fortunately it was a great cast and crew and the director was fantastic and gave us a whole bunch of freedom to play with it and let us do our thing.
MO: What do you have to do there? I mean, with Charlie, we’ve seen this kind of character in some movies. Did you do some research for that role? What experiences did you take to really bring Charlie full-circle?
(CE): Well you know I wanted him to be an accumulation of a lot of different characters… some people that I’ve met in my own life and some actors. We’re so used to seeing the kind of Hugh Grant, you know… and I just wanted it to kind of be like High Grant on ecstasy.
MO: When did you know Amanda [Seyfried] jumped on board and when did you guys first meet?
(CE): I always knew that she was playing Sophie, and I was really excited. I had watched her in “Mean Girls” and I watched a bit of her in “Big Love“ as well. I always thought that she was really talented but I never that that she was going to be so funny as she was. She’s hilarious. So, I went to London and tested with her… we did it a couple times, and then I was literally flying to LA, found out I had it, and then had to get back on the plane again the next day.
MO: What did you guys to on set to collaborate and joke around? Because you guys flow together really well in the movie.
(CE): Yeah! We’ll I think because it was just about having fun. We were laughing a lot in rehearsals and everything… we really clicked as far as humor. When I first met her I said to her: ‘Look, I think we’re soul mates.’ I felt an instant connection. And she said: ‘Security’… and I was like: ‘no, no, my names Chris.’ And then this guy came and took me away. But then we did end up getting along and it was good… really good. We sorted that out.
