Interview with “The Karate Kid” Stunt Coordinator Master Wu

MakingOf: Can you describe how you first started working with Jackie Chan

Master Wu: Okay, so this was 12 years ago, one of the JC team is called Brian Allen so he came to Shanghai and the Wushu for me. So after training, he said he worked for Jackie Chan, so I’m surprised… this is my dream. So he asked me: do you have an interest for working with Jackie. I said: Of course, this is my dream. So later on, he called me and said: Okay, come to work for Jackie. So my first movie is ‘Shanghai Noon’

MO: How was your first meeting with Jaden?

(MU): I first started in March, so I only had three and a half months for training Jaden. So Jaden never trained in Wushu before, it’s like Chinese Martial Arts, Wushu. So, every week we trained five days so each day is like three hours. We trained in the morning, and in the afternoon Jaden needed to go to school so he worked so hard. He’s really, really focused.

MO: How difficult it to be able to pick that up in that much time

(MU):Mostly three and a half months is not enough time for preparing for the movies for the kids. For us, maybe its okay, but for the kids it more difficult because you need to talk to him, explain to him, let him understand. But Jaden’s very very smart, and most kids need maybe like half a year to one year. But Jaden, three weeks later he got this pose [points to poster] – it’s a real kick. After the movie, Jaden is still training four months, so I’m here for four months already, so Jaden still keep training

MO: So do you think he’ll still continue to train? Are there different levels that he can get to?

(MU): I think he would get it.  If the part two… total different lever. Sometime I told Jaden: you already can go to competition.

MO: What advise do you have for someone looking to do what you do?

(MU): I would say that communication is very important… the movie’s teamwork. In the action movie it’s a very import thing firstly, is do things very safely – nobody getting hurt. That’s the first important thing.

MO: Are you surprised when you go and watch the movie after it’s done?

(MU): The first time I saw the movie it made me cry. Jackie is totally, totally different. He’s a really, really good actor. And those years I worked for him… I think this movie he’s totally different. It’s the next level for Jackie.
