Samuel L. Jackson: This first time I saw this movie I actually saw it in the editing room, and the next time I saw it was at Sundance in a big room with a big screen. And its kind of amazing to sit there and you hear the whole movies going: [makes crying noises]. I looked to the people next to me and they’re going: [makes loader crying noises.] Jesus, is the movie that emotional? Its kind of fun to know that you’re having an effect

 

MakingOf: What stands out most to you when you read a script? What are those things that need to be there for you to want to get involved?

 

(SLJ): First a story that resonates with me, that sticks with me, that makes me want to actually see that particular story on screen. Then I have to want to see myself in that particular story. Sometimes it’s a the character that they ask me to play and sometimes its another character that I see, and I go: ‘I’d rather be this guy’… [a character] that presents a bigger challenge to me as an actor. But its always the story, stories make you go the movies for me… its all about what the story is and do I want to see that story played out?

 

MO: And with Naomi… did you two know each other before you started working on this project?

 

(SLJ): Sort of socially, but we hadn’t spent a lot of time together. I knew Liam better because we had done a film together, but the last time I saw [Naomi] was maybe two and a half or three years ago. She just had the baby, she shows up, and the first thing we do is that big scene in the apartment where we’re…

 

MO: [Laughs] That was my question…

 

(SLJ): So it was kind of good that we did that first, and that was kind
