Kristin Wiig and Ryan Phillippe for “MacGruber

MakingOf: You have so many awesome characters just throughout SNL, what are some of the skills you need to have to like develop a fully realize comedic character?

(Kristin Wiig): Oh my gosh, well I think for me on the show they come from so many different places and I think the writers on the show are so amazing, and a lot of it just comes from sitting in a room and laughing and thinking of something, or maybe taking something you overheard on the street, and you know just trying to make them a fully realized person is kind of key I think.

(MO):And then how did you do that with Vicky?

(KW):Did I do it with Vicky? I don’t know (laughs.) Vicky was so fun to play because they wrote such a funny female character, which is kind of rare these days I think.

(MO): And Ryan, how did involved with this project? When did you know this is something that you wanted to do?

(Ryan Phillippe): Well, I was so excited when I got the call for the read-through; I was confused (laughs.) I was really excited. I was a huge fan of the sketch, I just have been. He’s so hilariously flawed, he may be the most flawed character in movie history; if you add up all the problems that MacGruber has. So, I got invited to go to the read-through and I had read the script the night before at my house by myself; laughed every single page, and I couldn’t wait to get there because I knew that a lot of the people I was a fan of like Will would be there and Seth Meyer’s and Lauren Michaels. I was really just super into that. I was really happy that I got to be apart of it. I’ve done so many dramatic movies and a lot of times you carry around the weight of whatever the material is, and it was so much fun to go and laugh from morning to night on a set.

(MO): On that topic, what’s the biggest difference between doing these dramatic roles and doing these comedic roles, like where do you change as an actor?

(RP):I don’t know because I play it pretty straight in this film. But the whole challenge for me was not breaking, not falling apart and ruining a take because Will and Kristin are hilariously funny, so that was a challenge.

(MO): What makes the best SNL sketch to you?

(KW):I’m a big fan of just silly, I kind of like when things are weird and don’t really sense (laughs.)

(MO): Last one Ryan, what are some of the big actions movies you were a fan of in the “80’s”?

(RP): Well, a lot of the one’s I feel like we kind of parodied in this movie, like Die Hard and Lethal Weaponand Rambo and Terminator. There’s definitely homage’s to those films within ours and that’s kind of fun.
