Adrian Brody Talks “Splice”

(Adrian Brody): It’s one of the most original and strangely disturbing films that I’ve read, you know. A lot of levels that appealed to me, it’s suspenseful, it’s a kind of science-fiction element that works on a real level, where we are and the advancements that have been made in today’s world. And then there’s character, there’s character based, it’s a character driven film. All of them, including Dren, the creature we create, is an actual character and has depth and the relationship between the three main characters is very complex and uh…

MakingOf: How was shooting for you with the scenes with Dren?

(AB): Well, look, I mean you have to consider there are always things that you have to, uh, be cognoscente of, you know, I think it’s easier when you’re dealing with an actor, just like DelphineChaneac, who plays Dren, and what she contributed and what she, kind of, her immersion into the character makes it much easier than just, ‘cause then, you know, then it’s just a matter of kind of, understanding. There are technical things that are part of my responsibility. But ultimately, I’m interacting with someone who is very present, and has done all this work as this creature and um, it’s fascinating.

MO: Now, did you do a lot of research going into this role about scientists and…

(AB): Genetic research? Yeah! I mean we had to a chance to work with geneticists in a lab and in a hospital and I think we can only gain a basic understanding of that complex field. We learned procedures that were very similar to what we were doing, how to operate pipettes and the equipment that we’d be using, you know, I think that that’s important.

MO: And you are Sarah, you believe the relationship there. Did you go through a lot of rehearsals together to get to that place?

(AB): You know, I don’t think we had time for a ton of rehearsal, um, but we got to spend a lot of time together in the lab and I think the wonderful thing about Sarah is she has a tremendous sense of humor. She’s very intelligent, she’s very believable as this character, she’s a wonderful collaborator. She finds the kinds of humor, the kinds of mischief with all of it and kind of, we had a good time.

MO: Were there any days on set that or any scenes in particular that stood out to you as being a favorite, now looking back?

(AB): There’s so many. There’s, you know, there’s a dancing sequence where I’m kind of teaching the creature to, you know, she’s sad and she’s isolated and we have to keep her in hiding and there’s this moment where my character is trying to lighten, just lighten the mood up and then there’s this weird, complex, thing that ensues as a result of that and, um, I like all of that, that’s really fun. But there’s some really good, like, scary moments that were fun to do as well.
