Christoph Waltz discusses "The Green Hornet" at Comic-Con 2010

Christoph Waltz: I had no idea what the Green Hornet was. I might have heard of it but... I don’t know. And I’m not anti, but I am acomic. I have absolutely nothing to do with comics; with comic books, with comic culture, with comic-con, with comic anything. I had no idea what all the implications were and I read the story, which was kind of funny. The self indulgent wimp turning superhero by accident against his will, I like that. Then, the fact that Seth Rogen plays this self indulgent, wimpy superhero. I like that enormously because I think Seth is great to say it with one word. I could say it with two, I think Seth is very great. And then Even, his writing partner, isn’t all that dumb either, and Michel Gondry directing it. What more original, quirkier, funny, unusual thing could you get?

MakingOf: And what about working with Michel Gondry and his unique directing style?

(CW): Absolutely, very unique. Is there such a thing as very unique? I don’t know. Unique is very enough, isn’t it? Anyway... yeah, that tool a minute and a half of adjustment. On the other hand, he is so funny and so original. The problem is that he has an idea every other second. Not minute. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to keep up. Because, you know, speaking of life on set and being normal I come with the best intentions, and then I find out that they might be my best intentions, but they are somewhat incongruent to what is happening. Yeah, it needs flexibility and a vast imagination. Nobody has an imagination like Michel, so it is stretching to the limit.

(MO): What does it take for you to get involved with a project.

(CW): Well, there are so many criteria that actually can play a part in it. Like in this case it  was really the consolation of the people who were talking about what they intend to do and not so much, you know, the part as it is on the paper.  Sometimes, you know, the part as it is on the paper is the most important thing. Sometimes only the director as explains what is going on. That is the wonderful thing. That it is different every time. There is no law that needs to be fulfilled in order to do a project or not. It lives. It’s an organism. It can be tamed. It can run away. It can throw temper tantrums. It can be a lovely thing. It can be hostile. Anything. That is why life on set is always submitted to that.
